My main complaint with this film was acting, and direction. While the story is so compelling and controversial, the adaptation was poorly done. I found Mena Suvari's acting less then adequate. Almost frightening in some ways. While I imaging Cathering Hill Bourne to be a slightly off woman, I was unhappy in Mena's portrayal of her.
I am always happy with Jack Huston however. Give me a Huston any day, and immediately I will find an improvement in that film. That family, can act. Always could, always will. John Huston immersed them into the world of film and acting, and I believe that family will always have a knack for it.
John Irvin I thought took to long to set up the story, dragged out the tension, and then ended it swifty. The ending to me, is on point with what Hemingway portrays - but it felt uncomfortable in a way as the conflict between the two main characters arose. Instead of it being heated and tentative.
While the film is beautiful in scenery, and design. The acting, and slow direction seem to have killed a great work from Hemingway - but in Irvin's defense it is no easy task to apply Hemingway in film.
