Resident Evil: Retribution
Evil Goes Global
Now, as a player of the Resident Evil game series, and an avid watcher of the film applique's - I was happy with Retribution. I tend to not be a fan of an ongoing series when it seems like they're making movies to make money. But from playing the games - you have to realize the games are the same way. There are multiple characters and plot lines that all just occur within the same dystopian society. And while some of these films have begun to blur in my head - Mila Jovovich however is the sole reason I am still entertained.
The beginning of the film was excited to say the least. There's a good 3-4 minutes of a scene playing entirely in repeat. Which was interesting, and well made I would have to say. It was different in terms of normal opening scenes let alone a continuation from the preceding film. So I give Paul W.S. Anderson props for making a decent action film.
I did however find a few aspects... annoying.
1.) Suburbia - a testing facility located inside Umbrella's underwater base. Suburbia being only one of the few testing facilities - all designed based on different locations or situations. There's one based in Toyko, NYC, Russia, and Suburbia. Now I understood a base for testing viral infections, and why these facade cities were constructed. But the Suburbia scenes were nothing but cut scenes from 2004 'Dawn of the Dead'. (Not in actuality, but I felt like I was re-watching the opening scene from DOFD all over again.)
2.) The blatant use that the Las Plagas - were in fact nothing but Call of Duty's Nazi Zombies. In the game, Las Plagas is a mutated virus that can bond with the human, causing the ready use of weaponry or operating machinery. But, dressed as Russian soldiers - I kind of got the hint that someone was lacking slightly in the creativity department.
My R: But, all in all, I enjoy mindless zombie killing any day - throw in a handsome Rolls Royce and I will leave with these few complaints and a smile. The 3D was enjoyable, but again, I only do 3D when screened in an IMAX theater - otherwise 3D isn't really my thing. And I did enjoy the return of several missed characters like: Jill, Rain, Luther and Todd.
